It starts with doing your research and finding a topic for your website. There are many free tools that can help you start. Write down 3-5 things that you know a lot about or are passionate about. It can be things that you really never thought could amount to much. Many often think that they don't know anything. That just isn't true. Everyone knows something about something. Look around online. Take a look at Google Trends or what are the top selling products on ebay or amazon.com. Take a look here at EzineArticles.com and see what are the most popular articles. Then use a free keyword tool like the Google AdWords Keyword tool or Word tracker (you can Google those) and find out how many people are searching for something similar. You can start really broad with terms like travel, cooking, gardening and start narrowing down a specific topic or area within each category that might work for you.
The idea is to find a topic that there is a lot of interest in but not many good sites out there providing that information. The goal is to find out what people want and then learn about DIY website building and turn that topic into a profitable website.
Before you actually start your site you will have to do more research and planning and first layout your site blueprint and navigation system. You will do that based on the keyword research that you do and your topic. Then start looking for ways to make money. There are many options- use Google AdSense which is putting ads on your website that when people click on them you get paid. Getting traffic will depend on you learning and implementing some search engine optimization. It is fairly simple. You just use the keywords in a specific way on the pages and use an XML sitemap and RSS feed to send info to the search engines.
You will also have to get other sites to link to you. It is not only for getting traffic but for looking good to the major search engines.
When you start getting traffic you can analyze what you are doing and find what is working best so you can do more of it!
It isn't easy. It doesn't happen overnight. DIY website building is just about learning and taking it all step by step.
