The first thing you need to know is what tools you'll need before you begin. You don't want to be in the middle of finishing drywall to find out you don't have the tools you need. Some of the things you'll need are tray, joint putty, hammer, paint, scraper, plaster, patches, sandpaper and dry cloth. When you begin to plaster the walls, you'll use a scraper to make sure it's smooth. Once it's dry, sand it with the sandpaper until it's smooth. When you put your nails in the drywall, make sure you indent them so you can fill the hole with plaster and make it smooth.
Before you begin hanging the drywall, sand the old wall so it is smooth and free of any lumps, bumps or scrapes. If there are holes in the wall, you'll need to apply some putty and scrape them smooth, followed by sanding. If there is a large hole or scratch, it may need two coats of plaster. Make sure you let the plaster dry thoroughly before you sand as well as between each coat. When you're all done sanding, wipe any excess dust off the walls and make sure they are clean and grease free.
The next step, after putting away your dry wall tools, is to paint your walls the color of your choice. To make your painting easier always do the baseboards and around windows and doors first. The base line area should be painted before you bring any furniture back into the room. If you don't remove your furniture before painting, make sure it is properly covered with plastic.
Once you're all finished and look at your walls, you'll be glad you chose to do this job yourself. If you find that your walls don't have to be totally replaced, you can fix them by patching them with plaster and sanding until smooth. However, if the walls are rotten or in bad condition, it may be to your advantage to have them replaced or hire a professional to do the job for you. The important thing to remember with your walls is to maintain them through the years. Repair problems when you first notice them and you'll find they're easier to repair. Although, finishing drywall is something you can do as a DIY project, it is time consuming and messy. Be sure to wear a mask while sanding the drywall to avoid breathing difficulties.
